WHAT IS TUROPOLJE?

Plainly speaking, Turopolje is a part of Posavina, located south of Zagreb, bordered by the right bank of the Sava river in the north-east and Vukomeričke gorice in the south-west. We talk of alluvial plain 45 km long and 23 km wide, that covers about 600 km2 wide territory with the approximate height of 110 mnm. It is halved by the Odra river with its tributary Lomnica. The most bred cereal grown is the maize. There are lot of forests, meadows, pasture-grounds and orchards. One of the most famous places is certainly Turopoljski lug (the Turopolje's grove). Further more, there can be found the very well known turopoljska svinja (Turopolje's pig) that was almost rooted out. There are coal and lignite deposits in Vukomeričke gorice, especially around Kravarsko. The biggest settlement is Velika Gorica, that exists under the name of Gorica since 1228.
And - for most people that would be enough.

But...

TUROPOLJE is prehistoric Mraclin and Staro Čiče's archeological finds going all the way back to the Bronze Age

TUROPOLJE is Andautonija (res publica Andautoniensium), the reason we have been digging the archeological site of Ščitarjevo for the last twenty years

TUROPOLJE is Campus Zagrabiensis that was known under this name until fifteenth century, but also Campus Turouo, mentioned in 1334.

TUROPOLJE is jobagioni of Zagreb (fortress' officials from times of the first Croatian - Hungarian kings). As a reward for exemplary service, few Turopolje's citizen became royal officials and noblemen by chart issued by king Bela IV; they were recognized as free noblemen and set free from the army service. In the  Croatian Parliament in Zagreb, 1278. Turopolje's jobagioni established an organization out of which Universitas nobilium Campi Turopolya (Noble Borough of Turopolje)  will develop later

TUROPOLJE  is its nobility for whose memories we search through our attics

TUROPOLJE is Lukavec grad that people of Turopolje built  for defense purposes in the other half of the fifthteenth century and that was in possession of many people (Ivan Tuz - master of Medvedgrad, Matija Korvin, Jurij Brandenburški and Nikola Zrinski) before it was, in ruin, in 1582. given back to people of  Turopolje who built a new city

TUROPOLJE is his unique, wooden chapels and churches from which only ten are saved

TUROPOLJE is indefinite, almost indescribable profusion of  shapes and adornment, embroidery and lace, whiteness and colour, škude, kraluže, poculice, peče, rubače, fertuni, čove, cabajke, plajete, ručnici...

TUROPOLJE  is St. George's and St. Lucia's, the Turopolje wedding, the Turopolje marathon, the Turopolje old - timer rally, restored Noble Borough of Turopolje and reestablished position of its district - prefect, banderij (flag platoon), komeš (district - prefect), the Museum of Turopolje, National University, the Galženica Gallery, the Kordić Gallery and "Si ju vidla kak zgledi?" (Did you see the way she looked?), "Bu on več videl!" (I'll show him!), Turopolje's envy and pride

TUROPOLJE is, also podgutnica (coloured ribbon for tying 'round the neck worn by Turopolje's flag platoon; during their stay in France, French  fell in love with it and started tying it the Croatian way (a la Croate) - the beginning of what, today, is called a tie (cravate)

And last, but not the least - Turopolje is its people who did not inherit the mentioned things from their ancestors, but just orrowed them from their successors.
